NOW HIRING: Director of Operations

Aldersgate Camp & Retreat Center is currently accepting applications for the position of Director of Operations (DO). This is a full-time year-round position. Benefits include health insurance, retirement, vacation, sick leave, and housing. This is a salaried exempt position.

Job Summary: Aldersgate’s Director of Operations is vital to the success of Aldersgate’s ministry. This position is at the forefront of our ministry. The mission of Aldersgate’s ministry is to intentionally provide for the faith development of individuals of all ages in Christ and in Christian community within the natural beauty of God’s creation. The Director of Operations implements Aldersgate’s strategy while preparing and overseeing staff and volunteers in their implementation of the strategy. The Director of Operations reports directly to The Executive Director of Camp & Retreat Ministry, Warren Hopper.

Characteristics: A well suited candidate would have proven management experience and a background in program and hospitality, preferably in a camp and/or ministry setting. Desired characteristics include being creative, flexible, servant-hearted, and an ideal team player (humble, hungry, and people smart). They must have a desire to work with and lead college-aged staff as well as being able to interact with guests of all ages. A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to receive constructive criticism is important. This individual should be a self-starter who is able to see the big picture while also being prepared to jump in wherever needed. They must be willing to take on additional responsibilities when required.

Essential Functions:

  1. To share the truths and Gospel of Jesus Christ through facilitation and processing of staff meetings,
    camper/guest group activities, and other opportunities in line with UM book of Discipline.
  2. To share the truths and Gospel of Jesus Christ through implementing the ministry strategy through summer camp and retreat programming.
  3. To establish a safe environment (Safe, Christian community) where people are open to God via activities, hospitality, hosting, facilitation, bonding, Bible Study, worship, etc. You are the one establishing the culture for staff, campers, and guests.
  4. To mentor staff and volunteers in their faith in Jesus and in ministry programming to enable them to share the truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Forming and preparing a team to reach our campers and guests for Christ.
  5. To promote the ministry of Aldersgate, inviting others to come and experience the love and message of Jesus through camp & retreat ministry.
  6. Recruiting, hiring, training, and preparing followers of Jesus to share the Gospel and implement camp and retreat ministry in conjunction with The Executive Director of Camp & Retreat Ministry.
  7. To provide daily leadership, supervision, project management, and coordination of the camp’s staff, volunteers, programming, and facilities as it supports the overall mission and programs. This includes cooperation with personnel in all essential areas including program, housekeeping, maintenance, hosting of guests, food service, administration, volunteer coordination, and supervision of seasonal program staff. The DO works with the Executive Director in overall management of Aldersgate.
  8. Promotion of Aldersgate’s summer camping ministry in the Red Bird Missionary Conference.
  9. Facilitating weekly staff meetings.
  10. Oversee the day to day operations of Aldersgate.
  11. Willingness to work weekends and to have a flexible schedule that varies by season.

Other Job Functions:

Oversite of construction projects in conjunction with the Executive Director, maintenance director, and the Aldersgate Committee.The D.O. would work in conjunction with the Executive Director on Budget Management.The D.O. would work in conjunction with the Executive Director on hiring.The D.O. would work in conjunction with the Executive Director on fundraising & promotion.The D.O. would work in conjunction with the Executive Director and Aldersgate Committee chair on reporting and committee business.Maintenance & upkeep of Aldersgate program elements and equipment in conjunction with the Loucon Program staff.Assisting other employees with their role on an as needed basis to ensure we meet camper/guest needs.The D.O. would meet monthly on zoom in an L3, loving, learning, and leading, process alongside the Loucon program staff and the Executive Director. This is an opportunity to grow while also dreaming and troubleshooting together.Attend professional development opportunities as needed or required.Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. Educational Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Speak fluently in English. Spanish would be helpful, but is not required.

Physical Requirements:

• The ability to belay a participant (shoulders, wrists, etc. in good working order)
• The ability to climb 30 feet utilizing a ladder and staples on a tree/pole.
• The ability to work heights up to 48 feet.
• The ability to spot activity participants.
• The ability to climb 4 flights of stairs
• The ability to lift and carry 30 pounds.
• The ability to work outdoors during all 4 seasons in a Kentucky climate.

Experience Requirements:

• A minimum of two summers (minimum 14 weeks total) serving in a Christian Camping ministry.
• A minimum of 80 hours of experience leading teambuilding type initiatives.

Aldersgate Camp & Retreat Center is a 354-acre Christian retreat, recreation, R.V., camping and worship center owned and operated by the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church. Historic Fitchburg Furnace and the old ghost town of Fitchburg are all within Aldersgate’s boundaries. Located in the foothills of Appalachia, Aldersgate is near Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge State Park, and other interesting and beautiful sites.
